Conflict Resolution Skills Training
for Nurses, Social Workers, Geriatric Care Managers, Physicians, Residents and other Allied Professionals

This is a one-day, skills-based workshop for professionals who work with an aging population. Through didactic presentations and practical, interactive learning based on real-life scenarios, participants will follow the intervention stages designed to move the parties through the conflict to a state of resolution that is satisfying, sustainable and that preserves the dignity and integrity of relationships.
Based on the tenets of Principled Negotiation, developed at Harvard, participants will learn:
- to negotiate and facilitate elder care issues into practical day-to-day practice
- key aspects of interest-based bargaining that can unlock even the most intractable disputes
- to differentiate between positions and interests
- to bring all voices “to the table”, particularly the elder family member deemed unable to play an active role in the conflict-resolution process
- how to address the conflict that is often generated by diverging opinions within the family and/or care giving community
Results of the workshop:
- understand the nature of conflict
- listen so people will talk
- differentiate between the content and the meaning
- discover ways to handle emotions and interpersonal dynamics that can impede resolution
- specifically deal with the angry, upset, complaining or confused client(s)
- facilitate multi-party decision-making
- arrive at consensus and bring closure
