The Key Qualities of A Great Caregiver

When it comes to dealing withhiring a caregiver the elderly, we are often faced with providing care for them – the best care possible. Given our busy lives, and our never-ending “to do” lists, turning to hiring a care-provider becomes an important option. But it is a big decision; one that family members put much thought into, and one that creates considerable anxiety because finding the “right” person to look after the needs of an aging parent is not always easy.

A few key considerations make for a smoother process. First, assess what are the needs of your aging parent. Like in any hiring situation, your caregiver must have the skills to fulfill the tasks, be they shopping, bathing, transporting, etc. Be perfectly honest at the interview stage so that the caregiver can be fully informed, and agree to your expectations about taking care of your parents’ needs.

Secondly, a pleasing personality is a must-have for a caregiver. Hiring a caregiver who does not have the qualities needed to become an accommodating, thoughtful and sensitive companion for any aging parent will cause serious problems not just for the older person but for the rest of the family. It takes time, but it will be time well spent to check references. Ask specifically about this caregivers capabilites and interest in pleasing your parent.

Another key consideration is the “patience” factor. As our parents age, we know that they can be moody and unhappy, but it’s important to understand that there is often much anxiety for them as they lose their independence and ability to look after themselves. Also, they may have more trouble communicating their needs. A primary caregiver needs to not just listen but also be sensitive enough to anticipate feelings and patiently assist them in facilitating their lives.

Whoever you hire, just remember that it is the comfort, well-being and happiness of your parent that should be the main focus of your decision. Your mother or father will feel your caring for them in your choice of caregiver.
